Why Some Gifted Learners Struggle to Show What They Know: Understanding the Ideation–Production Bottleneck in Gifted and Twice-Exceptional Learners

Why can a gifted child spend hours building an invention, creating in Minecraft, or talking endlessly about a favorite topic, yet have difficulty showing what they know in expected ways? Perfectionism, anxiety, motivation, executive functioning, and other well-established factors may all contribute, yet many families are still left wondering why their child's abilities seem so inconsistent. Through four memorable learner stories and new doctoral research examining highly and profoundly gifted and twice-exceptional learners, participants will discover why production is often context dependent. They'll explore how educational environments can either create or reduce barriers between what gifted learners know and what they are able to demonstrate. Together, we'll explore the Ideation–Production Bottleneck Model, a practical framework for understanding these seemingly contradictory patterns. Parents and educators will leave with five research-informed strategies to recognize production bottlenecks, reduce unnecessary barriers, and intentionally build production skills when they are truly needed.

Participants will:

• Recognize common characteristics of the Ideation–Production Bottleneck.

• Explain why learner production is often context dependent and how educational environments can either contribute to or reduce production bottlenecks.

• Apply five practical, research-informed strategies to reduce unnecessary production demands while intentionally developing production skills that support individual learner goals.
